Tenor vocalist Brian Cheney is guest soloist for this concert of music featuring—and inspired by—song. Brian, with career successes ranging from musical theatre to opera and TV, demonstrates his musical versatility in this MetWinds appearance as he performs art song, musical theatre, music written specifically for voice and band by Percy Grainger, and a famous opera aria from Aida. The melodic and virtuosic playing of the MetWinds instrumentalists are similarly featured across a wide range of song-inspired works including the delightful Strauss opera overture The Gypsy Baron and Darius Milhaud's French folk-song-laden work from the classic band repertoire, SuiteFrancaise. Song's integral role in church traditions inspired the other major works in this concert including Kathryn Salfelder's recently composed Cathedrals conducted by MetWinds Assistant Conductor Meghan MacFadden, and the concert's grand-finale: Come Sunday by Omar Thomas, a two-movement tribute to the Hammond organ's central role in black worship services, culminating in a virtuosic, frenzied, and joyous celebration.
